Abstract: The predicted enhancement of air [CO2] and of global climate changes in this century, linked, e.g., to increased temperatures, appear as a risk factor for coffee crop according to it agroclimatic zoning. However, after exposure to long-term adverse conditions, plants may trigger acclimation/tolerance mechanisms. Furthermore, the positive impact of the enhanced [CO2] on the photosynthetic metabolism (and absence of down regulation) might help to mitigate the effects of high temperature on the coffee plant, which was never characterized for Coffea sp.. Therefore, this study aims at linking the physiological and biochemical responses of coffee to temperature and [CO2] changes using the photosynthetic metabolism as probe to evaluate the acclimation and tolerance of the plant. For that, Coffea arabica L. cv. IPR 108 plants were grown for one year at 25/20 ºC (day/night) and under controlled conditions (temperature, relative humidity, irradiance, photoperiod), 380 or 700 μL CO2 L-1, without nutrient, water and root space limitations. The temperature was then increased gradually (0.5 ºC/day) from 25/20 ºC up to 42/34 ºC. The photosynthetic functioning was assessed at the temperatures of 25/20 ºC, 31/25 ºC, 37/30 ºC e 42/34 ºC through gas exchange (photosynthetic capacity through O2 evolution) and some parameters of chlorophyll a fluorescence [initial fluorescence (Fo), photochemical efficiency maximum of the PSII (Fv/Fm), linear electron transport rate (ETR) and actual photochemical efficiency of the PSII (Fv'/Fm')]. The results showed a higher metabolic performance in plants grown under higher [CO2]. From 37 ºC the plants under normal [CO2] showed strong impacts on the photosynthetic capacity, but the electron transport was affected only by 42 ºC. The plants grown under 700 μL CO2 L-1 maintained higher PSII efficiency at 42 ºC. The results showed that rising [CO2] enabled the IPR 108 maintain functional the photosynthetic machinery at high temperatures, which is very relevant considering the predicted future climatic changes.
